Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes learning really matter. Not just finishing homework. But the kind of learning that stays with students because it connects to who they are. I recently read an article about what helps people feel truly fulfilled. One idea kept coming up again and again. People tend to find the most meaning when they feel a sense of purpose and contribution. That idea stayed with me, especially as I thought about math. Because for many students, math becomes more than a subject. When it truly makes sense, it becomes something they carry with them. A way of thinking. A source of confidence. Sometimes, even a quiet turning point. That belief is at the heart of everything we do at The Math Gift. The Math Gift Scholarship We are offering two Two $500 Math Gift scholarships to students who can reflect on how math has been a meaningful part of their life. This scholarship is open to high school seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher who plan to use math in their future career, even if indirectly. We are not looking for perfect writing. We are looking for honest reflection. For some students, this might mean writing about:

There’s a math example I use with students that comes from an old story.I don’t know exactly where it came from, but the lesson behind it is hard to forget. It starts very simply. Once upon a time, a girl saves a kingdom from trouble. As a reward, she can ask for anything. She merely asks for a grain of rice on the first day. And two grains of rice on the second day. Each day, doubles the amount from the day before for 30 days. At first, it feels almost silly to keep counting.Four grains on...
The other day, a student was working on a multi-step problem. They knew the steps. But when they got to 18 + 7, they slowed down. You could see the mental wheels spinning. They counted on their fingers, got the answer, then moved on. Nothing major, right? But by the time they reached the end of the problem, they were frustrated by how long it had taken. This is the moment I see over and over again. It’s not that students don’t understand the concept. It’s that everything feels… slow. They...
